One of the most enjoyable shoots lately was for the NZ Flying Doctor Service, based out at CHCH airport. Sam Whitelock has pledged his support for the service, and we had a promotional session with him, the crew, and other supporters.
Interestingly, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter operating from the same base, is much better known. It is the brighter, big brother, that people see at skifields, on the news, flying to Hagley Park… But the NZ Flying Doctor service actually operates more patient missions, currently 1200 annually. The service operates 24/7 transferring critical care burn victims, spinal injury patients, neonatal transfers, trauma victims, surgery transfers, organ delivery, blood or equipment supplies. While funded by the the DHB / Govt, it still faces a $3m deficit annually.
