Simple life lesson

A few years ago, there was very nearly a fire in a back country hut where I was staying. A lesson that sticks with me to this day, is a brief mental note of any exit, or fire extinguisher, when staying somewhere new.
Not a harrowing scar on my psyche by any means. More a simple life lesson having once faced flames impeding the only exit. Fortunately the razor sharp reaction of a friend saved the day (good work Vern!), and catastrophe was averted.

I had a similar experience this weekend staying in Wellington. Having just had the CHCH earthquake, I was at least subconsciously aware of staying on the 10th floor, with wall to floor windows on two sides. A great hotel, but the recent events in CHCH certainly bring a heightened awareness of your surroundings. Funny isnt it?! Normally I wouldnt think twice.
